Colour!

Continuing the discussion on colour check out this New Yorker cover depicting the Twin Towers. On the left side is how the original cover appeared printed black gloss on black matte and on the left is a lightened version so you can clearly distinguish the silhouettes.
I feel this depicts Spiegelman's mastery of colour perfectly.

  1. I totally agree David!, i also posted this image. Its just simple but yet so awesome becaue the colors and the way Art uses them. My question is, what is the reasoning for the change in color? was he just experimenting with the first darker colors in the first cover or what? Im not sure if you aware of this, but apparently there are ghostly images in the magazine cover."At first glance, the cover appears to be totally black, but upon close examination it reveals the silhouettes of the World Trade Center towers in a slightly darker shade of black. Mouly repositioned the silhouettes so that the North Tower's antenna breaks into the "W" of the logo. The towers were printed in a fifth black ink on a black field employing standard four-color printing inks, and an overprinted clear varnish was added. In some situations, the ghost images only became visible when the magazine was tilted toward a light source"---ASME's Top 40 Magazine Covers of the Last 40 Years", October 17, 2005. 2. I can only imagine what Art was thinking when Sept 11th happened. After becoming so familiar in the tragedies of World War 2, how much it hurt his family, he must have been so afraid. He lived close by, with his young children and his wife.

The black is the such a strong representation of the fear and saddness that was being felt by America at time. I love how so much of his art makes you stop and look at things more closely. Art is able to use simplicity to it's finest. Much like his style and symbolism in Maus, he works best in black and white.
